Step 1: Check If Google Can Even Find Your Business

Open Google and search your exact business name (in quotes). Example: "ABC Dental Clinic Kota Kinabalu"

Results:

• Shows on maps + website: You have a profile. Jump to "Why you're not ranking for specific keywords" below.
• Shows website only, no map: You have a website but no Google Business Profile. Create a profile immediately.
• Shows wrong business: You have a duplicate profile or someone claimed your business. Claim your profile in Google Business Profile.
• Shows nothing: Neither profile nor website is claimed/indexed. Create both.

Step 2: Verify Your Business on Google

If your profile isn't verified, Google doesn't fully trust it. You must verify with a postcard (7 days) or phone (5 minutes).

Go to google.com/business, click your profile, and look for a "Verify" button. Phone verification is instant—use it if available.

Step 3: Audit Your Profile Completeness

Google ranks profiles higher if they're "complete." Check these fields:

Step 4: Check Your Website

If you have a website but it's not showing on Google Search, there are four common issues:

Issue 1: Website Not Indexed

Google hasn't "read" your website yet. This happens to new sites or sites that are hard to crawl.

Fix: Go to google.com/search-console, add your website, and submit your sitemap. This tells Google to index your site. Wait 1-4 weeks.

Issue 2: Site Is Too Slow

Google prioritizes fast sites. If your site loads in >3 seconds, it ranks lower (or not at all on mobile).

Check speed: Use PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev). Aim for 70+ score.

Quick fixes: Compress images, upgrade hosting, use a CDN (content delivery network) like Cloudflare.

Issue 3: Site Is Not Mobile-Friendly

Check mobile-friendliness: Use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test. Look at your site on a phone. Buttons should be clickable, text readable, no horizontal scrolling.

Issue 4: Site Has No SSL Certificate (Not HTTPS)

If your website URL is http:// (not https://), Google shows a warning to visitors and ranks you lower. You must have HTTPS.
